Super Do Re Mi – Dalcroze Embodied Solfege Approaches

Price range: $200.00 through $420.00

Description

Dalcroze Embodied Solfege Approaches is an introduction to Dalcroze solfege techniques that allow students to experience tonal concepts as embodied sensations. The “feeling first” approach of Dalcroze requires everything to have a connection to the body, and ideas like melody, harmony, phrase, cadence, and tonality are no different. These concepts can be taught through movement exploration, for students of all ages. Music students, general music teachers, choral directors, and instrumental teachers will all find these techniques useful in combination with their existing ear training approach. No experience with Dalcroze is necessary for this course!

Instructor

Anthony Molinaro is a music educator, multi-instrumentalist, and producer specializing in the Dalcroze approach. With 17+ years of public school experience, he pioneered an authentic Dalcroze classroom in Pennsylvania. He holds a master’s in music education from Carnegie Mellon University, where he teaches Eurhythmics as a guest lecturer.

A sought-after clinician, Anthony has presented at PMEA, OMEA, TMEA, AOSA, and Kodály events, as well as international conferences. He served as board chair and treasurer of the Dalcroze Society of America.

Beyond the classroom, he has created content for Music ConstructED and QuaverEd, hosts The New Dalcrozian podcast, and writes MusicXT: Moments and Movement. In 2025, GIA Publishing released Make It Music: Dalcroze Strategies for Every Classroom, co-authored with Stephen Neely.

Outline

Overview: This course introduces Dalcroze solfège techniques that allow students to experience tonal concepts physically. Rooted in a “feeling first” philosophy, each lesson integrates movement, improvisation, and interactive exercises to help students internalize musical structures naturally.

Lesson 1: Experiencing Dalcroze Solfège
Objective: Students will explore the historical and theoretical foundations of Dalcroze solfège while actively experiencing its principles. Through movement-based exercises, they will engage with core Dalcroze strategies such as Quick Reaction (QR), Follow, Canon, Replacement, and Systemization.
Key Activities:
Embodied Tonality: Stepping simple melodic patterns in space.
Follow & Canon Games: Mirroring sung/moved phrases.
Quick Reaction (QR): Instantaneous musical responses using gesture and movement.

Lesson 2: Feeling Scales – C to C Exploration
Objective: Through movement and practice, students will experience the physical and aural shape of C-C scales, deepening their tonal awareness.
Key Activities:
Walking the Scale: Moving through pitch space to embody steps, half-steps, and tonal gravity.
Gestural Solfège: Using arm movements to reinforce scale degrees.
Improvised Melodic Pathways: Singing and moving through variations of the scale.

Lesson 3: Tricordes – The Building Blocks of Melody
Objective: Students will explore tricordes as a tool for improvisation, analysis, and understanding tonic-dominant relationships in a kinesthetic way.
Key Activities:
Embodied Tricordes: Stepping through three-note groups with different movement qualities.
Improvisation with Tricordes: Creating melodic ideas through movement prompts.
Tonic-Dominant Connection: Using gesture and space to feel harmonic pull.

Lesson 4: Harmony in Motion – Chord Quality & Storytelling
Objective: How can movement enhance the experience of chord quality? Students will explore harmony through aesthetic and sensory-based movement experiences, making it accessible for learners of all ages.
Key Activities:
Moving Through Chords: Expressing major, minor, diminished, and augmented qualities through weight, flow, and posture.
Storytelling with Harmony: Collaborating on narratives that reflect harmonic progressions.
Kinesthetic Listening: Reacting physically to harmonic shifts in recorded and live music.

Lesson 5: Teaching Sight Singing Through Embodiment
Objective: Students will explore pedagogical principles for teaching sight singing using movement-based, multi-modal strategies. They will prepare for their final project, in which they will design a short activity utilizing a Dalcroze strategy.
Key Activities:
Scaffolding Sight Singing: Progressive activities from audiation to notation.
Physicalizing Sight Reading: Stepping, clapping, and gesturing to reinforce notation.
Peer Collaboration: Creating short exercises for classroom use.

Lesson 6: Final Projects & Course Synthesis
Objective: Students will present their final projects, demonstrating how they applied a Dalcroze strategy to solfège teaching. The course will conclude with a reflection and discussion on applying Dalcroze solfège techniques beyond the classroom.
Key Activities:
Student Presentations: Showcasing Dalcroze-based solfège activities.
Group Discussion: Reflecting on challenges, insights, and next steps.
Final Movement Exploration: A culminating activity integrating key concepts from the course.
