Singing to Success: Adapting the Kodály Method into Holistic Musicianship Development

Description

Multifaceted musical hearing and musical imagination are indispensable tools in music-making. This workshop aims at showing ways to incorporate the training of the most essential musical skills melody, harmony, structure through carefully planned vocal-based music instruction in the framework of either a music lesson or choral/orchestral rehearsal.

Activities of the workshop include the systematic use of rhythm language and relative solmization. The workshop is recommended for both teachers teaching a musical instrument or music in schools, as well as choral conductors.

Outline

Day 1: Lesson Planning and Activity-Based Teaching for Young Learners

Participants will be introduced to a model for creating engaging, activity-based lesson plans for teaching instrumental and vocal works. This session focuses on introducing musical concepts through singing and movement, designed especially for younger music students and choir singers. Activities will include unison and part-singing, rhythmic and melodic exercises, and simple polyphonic work, with a special emphasis on singing basic harmonies.

Day 2: Developing Musical Understanding Through Repertoire Deconstruction

Building on Day 1, this session explores how to approach more complex instrumental and vocal repertoire. Participants will learn how to break down musical material to plan effective classroom activities that support both skill development and a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts. The use of relative solfa and rhythm syllables will be integral throughout this session.

Day 3: Teaching Complex Works – A Case Study on Beethoven’s Spring Sonata

This session demonstrates how to approach advanced musical works by gradually building from foundational elements. Using Beethoven’s Spring Sonata as a case study, participants will engage in musical skill-training activities designed to prepare students for complex repertoire. The session will also include hands-on tasks and group discussions on effective teaching strategies and techniques.

NAC-NICA Subsidy

The NAC–NICA Training Support is a joint initiative by the National Arts Council (NAC) and the National Instructors & Coaches Association (NICA) to support self-employed arts instructors in Singapore. Eligible instructors may receive course fee subsidies (up to 90% of the unsubsidised course fee) and a training allowance based on course hours, capped overall at $500 per person.

Each course has a planned start date, which may shift slightly depending on participant sign-ups. We will confirm the final schedule with all registered participants once enrollment is finalized.

Yes, they will be made available for participants until 6 months after the completion of each course.

E-certificates will be issued on course completion to Active Participants.

Active Participants will be involved in class participation: interacting with course instructors, receiving feedback on class assignments/submissions, and they will have playing opportunities in class etc. Observers will be observing these segments of the class.

Active Participants will receive an E-certificate of participation, and Observers will receive a certificate of attendance.

5 days before the course commences.

Yes, simply get your friends together and send us an email to request for a second round of the course! If we receive sufficient signups we will repeat the course.

We do not conduct make-up classes. Learners who miss a session can catch up on the class content by watching the session recording thereafter. If there are any class assignments, learners are to contact the instructor directly.

We at the Academy do our utmost to make courses proceed as planned. However, there are times when unforeseen circumstances force a class to be cancelled. When this happens, we are committed to refunding the total amount, in an efficient manner, including any costs of using third-party payment gateways.

Should a participant need to cancel, we will make efforts to accommodate refunds, though costs of using third-party payment gateways will be borne by the participant.

Late cancellations may not be able to be refunded, as they will have been factored into the confirmation of running the course. We will provide a full refund for cancellations up to 2 weeks before the start of a course, following this a 50% refund with up to 1 week of notice. Notifications of fewer than 7 days will most likely not be eligible for a refund. We thank you for your understanding.
