An effective use of the pedals can greatly enhance a musical performance, in its coloristic effects, creation of smoother, seamless lines and warmth of sonority. Indiscriminate use of pedals however, would negatively affect a performance, with clashing harmonies and muddied textures that could almost render the performance incoherent.
This course shines a spotlight onto the pedals, beginning with an introduction to the mechanism and effects of the various pedals. This will then be followed by sessions exploring the use of the pedals through different periods of classical music, from the Baroque to Modern repertoire. Active participants are also invited to bring musical excerpts of their choice for discussion.
