Embracing New Classical Piano Music

Description

Teaching and learning modern classical piano music can be intriguing but sometimes the process can be overwhelming, especially with unfamiliar composers and music. 20th and 21st century music encompasses a variety of genres and categories including impressionism, expressionism, jazz and world fusion, neo-classicism and neo-romanticism, and minimalism. This seminar aims to explore contemporary piano literature and discover modern styles to enhance our program repertoire, and allow participants to connect with the current classical music trend and get to know some living composers.

Music from the ABRSM, Trinity College London, and Royal Conservatory of Music syllabus up till diploma level will be discussed during the seminar.

Outline

In this seminar, Dr. Jackie Yong will begin with a concise overview on the development of classical music since the post-romantic period and how composers of different nationalities influence each other with the rise of globalization.

With the understanding of the historical development, we will then learn about a systematic approach to introduce modern classical music to our students through logical pedagogical sequence.

After that, he will reveal some universal aspects of interpreting modern classical piano music which ultimately serve as teaching tools for piano teachers to understand and analyze especially those unfamiliar composers and styles. Aspects such as vitalizing articulation, sonorities and tone colors, durations of sound and silence, and bringing out the character of individual pieces.

The final portion of the seminar will include a live demonstration on how to dissect, understand, practice, and interpret modern music from a concert pianist’s perspective. Music from the List C category in ABRSM syllabus and diploma level will be discussed during the seminar.
