Professor Matthew Marshall is an award-winning internationally-recognised classical guitarist and recording artist who has performed solo, with orchestras and in chamber music ensembles on four continents. He has performed as soloist with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Guanajuato Symphony Mexico, the Kemerovo Philharmonic Russia, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and many others. As a recording artist, he has released thirteen albums of music for solo guitar, chamber music and with orchestra. His solo album Fragments was a finalist in the Best Classical Artist category of the 2020 New Zealand Music Awards.

Professor Marshall has also balanced his performing alongside an academic leadership career. He has held a number of leadership positions in New Zealand, Australia and England, including Dean of Arts and Social Science at Southern Cross University, Dean of Creative & Performing Arts at Central Queensland University, Director of Music at Dartington College of Arts UK, and Head of Music at Massey University. He is currently Dean of the School of Arts at Sunway University, Malaysia.

He studied music in New Zealand, England and USA and holds a doctorate from the University of Otago and postgraduate qualifications from Victoria University of Wellington and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is a keen restorer of British classic cars and is also a trained automotive mechanic.
